  • Beijing is SINKING!?

If smog and pollution wasn't enough, an international study led by Beijing-based researchers has discovered that the city is sinking at an alarming rate since 2003. The city, which has over 20 million people, is sinking as much as 4 inches per year in some areas mostly affecting the central districts such as Chaoyang, Changping, Shunyi and Tongzhou districts. Depleted groundwater is the reason for the occurrence thus far since it is the main source of water for everything from commercial, to industrial and household. The study was published this month and was supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China.

MAD Architects are responsible for designing the Chaoyang Park Plaza, which will be situated in Beijing. Made to resemble mountains, the plaza is supposed to represent an element of nature. How do you insert a natural element in a crowded, bustling metropolis? That's a question MAD Architects sought and subsequently found the answer to. They're responsible for designing the Chaoyang Park Plaza, which will be situated in Beijing. The idea was to invoke a natural environment to soften the densely built up city. What sets the plaza apart is the shape. Made to resemble mountains, the plaza is supposed to represent an element of nature. The mountainous buildings will house commercial, office, and residential spaces. Scheduled to be completed in 2016, the plaza is being built next to one of the city's biggest parks. With the park's water and green space in the background, the surroundings will amplify that natural aspect. Two asymmetrical towers are the focal point of the project. Connected by a courtyard lobby, the glazed towers have ridges and an imperfect shape, making them resemble mountains. For a source of inspiration, the architects viewed Chinese classical landscape paintings to help them with their designs. MAD architects released a statement noting "The urban space creates a balance between high urban density and natural landscape. The forms of the buildings echo what is found in natural landscapes, and re-introduces nature to the urban realm."

APEC Summit 2014 | Peoples Republic of China Russia China APEC deals reflect ‘Natural SynergyNovember 12, 2014 RT. Russia’s colossal economic shift toward Asia in energy, finance, and infrastructure deepened at this year’s APEC summit in Beijing with 17 major bi-lateral business deals with China. The strategic alliance could crowd out other global players. The deals signed by the world’s second and eighth largest economies reflect a 'synergy', as natural resource rich Russia has a lot to offer a country with one of the world’s fastest growing populations and economies, Martin Jacques, columnist and author of When China Rules the World, told RT. “Russia is very rich in natural resources and China is very poor so there is a natural synergy in their economic relationship. Russia has something to offer China which China needs,” he said. Both Russia and China are also uncomfortable with the current US-dominated world order, although not in quite the same way, says Jacques. “Russia’s interest’s needs and status is not respected and I think that is essentially the problem. China acknowledges the importance of the international order, definitely wants to be part of it, but at the same time it doesn’t feel it’s got the same stake in that system as for example the US,” he said. The headline stealing accord was, of course, the deal between Russia’s Gazprom and China National Petroleum Corp. When completed the western pipeline will deliver up to 30 billion cubic meters of gas in addition to the 38 billion annually agreed in May. Opening a second pipeline to China on top of the $400 billion agreement struck in May will make China the largest consumer of Russian gas. According to energy consultants Tri-Zen International, this is bad news for other energy exporters, who already face stiff competition. “It’s just bad news generally,” for LNG around the world, said Peter Howard, President of the Canadian Energy Research Institute to Bloomberg News. “It’s going to get really crowded,” he said. The western route is better for Russia because it is near the country’s largest oil fields and close to the Chinese border. The contract is expected to be signed early next year according to Gazprom CEO Aleksey Miller. The other major energy deal was Rosneft subsidiary Vankorneft’s offer to China National Oil and Gas Exploration and Development to control a 10 percent stake in its second-largest oil field, Vankor. It is estimated to have reserves of 520 million metric tons of oil and 182 billion cubic meters of natural gas, and covers 417 square km. Moscow and Beijing also amended prepayment crude oil deliveries from 2015-2017. Power deals China continues to pick up large stakes in Russian power utilities, as it looks for sources to power its growing economy. Russian hydroelectricity generator RusHydro signed several agreements worth $4.9 billion (230 billion rubles) with Chinese power companies. RusHydro will partner with the Sanxia “Three Gorges” company to finance, construct, and operate, hydroelectric power plants in Russia’s Far East in order to export electricity to China. The neighbors will jointly (Russia with 51 percent, China 49 percent) finance and construct a 2000 megawatt hydroelectric power plant and three smaller ones on the Amur River basin. The stations can also be used to control floods, which devastated Russia’s Far East and parts of Northern China in the summer of 2013. Another separate deal was struck with the Power Construction Corporation of China (PowerChina) for the construction of a storage pump plant on the Shapsha River in the Leningrad Region some 300 km from St. Petersburg. The project will cost $3 billion and it is expected to be 70-75 percent funded by Chinese and Russian companies. Russia’s power generation company ОАО TGK 2 inked an agreement with the Huadian Power International Corporation Limited (HPIC) for energy projects in Russia’s northern Archangelsk Region on the White Sea The project will create jobs, boost tax revenue and improve social and economic conditions in the region. Russia plans to raise funds through Chinese banks. This isn’t China’s first incursion into a Russian power company. In 2011 HPIC began a joint venture with TGK 2 to build a power plant in Russia’s Yaroslavl region. Finance Deals Russia’s biggest lender Sberbank and China’s state-owned Export-Import Bank of China signed accords, including deals on insurance, and a framework agreement on credit lines. Another Russian banking major, VTB, signed a cooperation agreement with Huawei Technologies, a Chinese technology company Russia’ foreign development bank Vnesheconombank (VEB) and China Development Bank (CDB) also signed a memorandum of understanding with VEB Asia and Russia’s Agency for Housing Mortgage Lending. ***

Natural Sound Beijing has officially launched its bid to host the 2008 Olympics. China's Olympic bid committee unveiled the stylized figure of an athlete as its Olympic emblem, a slogan and an Internet web page in an effort to win the hearts of the International Olympic Committee which will decide the host of the games. China's previous bid for the 2000 games was marred by criticism over its human rights record. Shrugging off its defeated effort to host the first Olympic games of the new millennium, on Tuesday Beijing launched a new drive to capture the Olympic bid for the games in 2008. At a ceremony attended by city mayor Liu Qi and Beijing's Communist Party boss and Politburo member Jia Qinglin, the Olympic Bid Committee faced a room full of journalists. The officials asked if there were any objections to its choice of a slogan and an emblem which will give a voice and a vision to China's Olympian effort. The committee received more than 2,000 design proposals for the emblem and over 30,000 proposed slogans from across the country, including Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. With unanimous approval the words "New Beijing, Great Olympics," were selected as the national slogan. Committee officials say the words signify that Beijing, a city with a history of over three thousand years, has entered the new millennium with a new profile after adopting economic reforms and opening to the outside world. The official emblem - designed jointly by experts from Hong Kong and Shenzhen -- resembles a five-pointed star rendered in the same colours as the Olympic rings. It is modelled after the "Chinese knot," a traditional Chinese handicraft, and symbolizes unity, cooperation, exchange and development by people of the world to build a better 21st century. The emblem appears as a star in the shape of a person practising traditional Chinese Wushu, a form of martial arts and is meant to bring out enhance China's traditional sports culture. China was deeply disappointed by its failure to be selected as the host of the 2000 Olympic games and blamed the United States, among other nations, for opposing Beijing's bid on the basis of a poor record of human rights. Toronto and Paris are among the top ten competitors facing China's latest Olympic bid for the 2008 games. Other cities include Osaka, Havana, Istanbul and Cairo. The host city of the games will be decided at the International Olympic Committee (I-O-C) conference in Moscow in 2001. Breaking from tradition for the first time, the host city of the 2008 games will be decided with IOC members' visiting the competing capitals. Bidding scandals in Salt Lake City rocked the committee and forced organizers to reform the process. The I-O-C members can always visit Beijing in cyberspace at a website (www.beijing-olympic.org.cn) opened today to promote the capital's image and provide up-to-date information on the Olympic bid. "Hello everybody, I'm Sophia, the latest robot from Hanson Robotics. I'm proud to be here at GMIC in beautiful Beijing, China," she impressively introduced herself, and later said in Chinese, "Hello China, hello everyone." "We're scaling the manufacturing of our 'Sophia' robot platform to address entertainment, customer service and medical applications. She is an incredibly natural looking robot within Artificial Intelligence that allows her to see faces, understand speech, and show a full range of natural facial expressions," said David Hanson, founder and CEO of Hanson Robotics. "We are selling to our customer partners, and eventually we will have a mass release of 'Sophia'. We expect that she will be very useful in China for helping teach science, and perform many other kinks of helper applications," said Hanson. Cameras inside her eyes, combined with computer algorithms, enable her to see, follow faces, make eye contact and recognize individuals. A combination of Alphabet's Google Chrome voice recognition system and other technologies enable Sophia to process speech, chat and get smarter over time. Robots are also moving ahead at the robotics lab of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, or the MIT, and some believe that four-legged robots will become more popular than the human-liked ones, since they are more useful. "Quadruple-ped and four-legged machines, they are much more robust. Everybody is fascinated by human-like robots, but in my opinion, I think four-legged machines are going to be much more practical and much more robust. So we are thinking about achieving mobility first and try to use these robots in very dangerous environments, power plants, and disaster situations, and then even oil refinery where there is a lot of chemical hazards and high temperatures, low temperatures. You can name it, you can think of so many situations where robots perform much better than humans," said Sangbae Kim, an associate professor of the Biometric Robotics lab of MIT. Kim built a robotic cheetah which can see and jump over hurdles as it runs, making it the first four-legged robot to run and jump over obstacles autonomously. Beijing has raised its heavy rain alert from yellow to orange, the second highest of China's four-tier warning system. It is expected to stay in place overnight, with some areas of the city estimated to receive more than 100mm of rain. Nearly 200 flights scheduled to leave Beijing were cancelled in the early afternoon on Wednesday. As a result of flooding, local railway and subway services have also been disrupted. Beijing Too Far To Help India's Immediate Neighbors In Times Of Natural Disasters. When Sri Lanka was hit by floods late in May and Bangladesh was struck by a cyclone days later, India rushed ships with relief material, divers and doctors for rescue operations. But the ships also carried a subtle message: the projection of India as a friend in need. India is trying to counter China's infrastructure and financial promises to South Asia in part by trying to underscore its credentials as a sensitive bigger neighbour quick to respond to crises like the ones in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, senior officials said. Officially, India has tried to suggest it is confident of its decision to boycott a summit in Beijing last month hosted by Chinese President Xi Jinping on his signature international project - the One Belt One Road (Obor) or Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Foreign minister Sushma Swaraj had said on Monday India was happy that some European nations too had articulated concerns over the Chinese connectivity initiative - a network of ports, highways and railroads connecting Asia, Africa and Europe - at the Beijing meet. But the presence of leaders from every South Asian nation barring India and Bhutan - which rarely takes foreign policy positions different from its bigger neighbour - at the Beijing meet has left New Delhi worried, and preparing for an alternative pitch to the region. Sushma, who has not travelled abroad since last September - she underwent a kidney transplant in December and has been recovering since - will also make her first visits outside the country after her recuperation to Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. India's relief and rescue efforts have won applause from its neighbours. It sent three ships to Sri Lanka. "When we had the floods, within 48 hours we had not one, not two but three ships from India coming to our assistance," Sri Lanka's foreign minister Ravi Karunanayake said here yesterday. "That shows the uniqueness of our relationship." India has contributed significantly to relief and rescue operations in its neighbourhood in the past too, including in 2015 when a devastating earthquake struck Nepal, leaving over 9,000 dead. The Narendra Modi government's assistance then won it respect and support in Nepal - though the Prime Minister blunted some of that by claiming he first informed Nepal's Prime Minister about the temblor. Sections of the Indian media, which focused not on Nepal's trauma but solely on the work of India's rescue forces, also riled many ordinary Nepalese. american aircraft carriers, china aircraft carrier, china carrier, china navy, china new aircraft carrier, china submarine, china vs us military, china vs usa military, chinese aircraft carrier, chinese navy, chinese navy news, chinese navy ships, chinese navy vs us navy, chinese submarines, indian navy vs chinese navy, new aircraft carrier, pla navy, us navy china, us vs china military, usa vs china military ====================================================================================================== DISCLAIMER: Each and every content used in this video is not imaginary.
